Mary Ellen Deringer, 71, of Oshkosh, died peacefully Thursday September 18, 2003 at her residence. Mary Ellen was born August 21, 1932 in LaCrosse, WI a daughter of the late Stanley and Bernice (Ellingson) Mattison. She graduated from LaCrosse Central in 1950. She married Frank “Chick” Deringer on August 11, 1956; he preceded her in death on September 29, 1997.
Mary Ellen retired from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh where she worked as a secretary for the Dean of Education for 25 years. She was an active member of Plymouth Congregational Church, where she also volunteered her time as a Deaconess; she also volunteered her time working with shut-ins, Iwana, Simiana, Winnebago Mental Health, Oshkosh Police Dept; the Salvation Army, and also the Hunger Task Force of Oshkosh, and the Oshkosh Area United Way. Mary Ellen was also a member of the Tuesday morning Woman’s Bible Study, the Red Hat Society, and the Paine Art Center. She enjoyed shopping, and craft shows, and collecting miniatures and angels.
She is survived by her sons, Vincent (Cathy) of Red Granite, Brett (Brenda) of Oshkosh, Christopher (Dawn) of Oshkosh, Matthew of Oshkosh; seven sisters, Gloria (Gene) Engler of Phoenix, AZ, Sharron Modahl of Minneapolis, Marsha (Aaron) Alens and Lori (Mike) Fitzpatrick both of LaCrosse, Jane (Allan) Wrobel and Marian (Don) Paul of Appleton and Gretchen of Madison; one brother, Michael (Donna) Mattison of LaCrosse, Six  grandchildren, Frank , Jake of Red Granite, Jennifer, Kimberly, Kaleb, Breana of Oshkosh,  a brother-in-law George (Betty) Deringer of Augusta, GA, a sister-in-law, Pat (Earl) Greip of Milwaukee. She was a loving Aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Gerald, and mother and father in-law, Frank and Loretta Deringer.
Funeral Service for Mary Ellen will be held on Monday September 22, 2003 at 2:00pm at Plymouth Congregational Church (1325 Georgia) with Rev Evans officiating. Family and friends may call at the church on Monday from 11:00am until the time of service. Entombment will be at Lake View Memorial Park.
She was truly an angel among us and will be greatly missed.
