Raymond Wellington Simmons passed away at his home at Rock Cove Assisted Living on January 22, 2005.  He was 94 years old.  Ray was born in Ilwaco, Washington on January 10, 1911, the son of Molly L. (Inman) and John A. Simmons.

At the age of four, Ray moved to Stevenson with his family where they lived at his grandfather’s place.  Ray went to school until the eighth grade and then went to work.  As a youngster he did all kinds of things including farming, picking and sorting fruit and working on the dam.  Later, he became a timber faller where he worked for Broughton, Daubenspeck, and SDS lumber companies, but Ray spent most of his career as a timber faller working for Rudy Hegewald.

On October 18, 1934, Ray married Dorothy L. Miller.  During the ’30’s and ’40’s Ray and Dorothy played guitar, harmonica and accordion at local family dances.  Ray loved hunting, fishing and gardening.  He was the Past Noble Grand of the Oddfellows Lodge, a member of the Elks Club in White Salmon and the Stevenson Grange and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

Surviving Mr. Simmons is his daughter Sandra Heirman of Stevenson; granddaughter Lori Heirman of Stevenson; nieces Delores Stevens of Estacada, Oregon and Joanne Gutzler of Maupin, Oregon; and his last hunting partner, Scott Midland.  Preceding Ray in death are his brother Donald, his sister Nadine and his wife Dorothy.
