Suzanne Martin passed away on June 13, 2009 having been born in Richmond, VA on May 15, 1941.  She attended St. Catherine‚Äôs School and later served on its Board of Directors.
She also attended Fairfax Hall and Converse College. Her first home was in Spartanburg, SC, where she was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent and the Spartanburg Junior League.  Suzanne moved to Tryon, NC in 1986 where she pursued her love of foxhunting with the Tryon Hounds and served on its Board of Directors and volunteered her time to the Tryon Hounds Steeplechase, Tryon Hounds Horse Show, and other activities of the club.  Mrs. Martin was instrumental in forming the Pacolet area Conservancy and served as its president for several years.  Her fundraising and other activities with Preservation North Carolina resulted in easements being placed on historic properties.  She was one of the founding members of the Polk County Courthouse Restoration project, which today has continued in its mission to preserve the oldest courthouses in western North Carolina. Mrs. Martin moved to Fauquier County in 2000 to be closer to her family.  She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville, its altar and flower guilds and a member of the Upperville Garden Club. Her survivors are her husband, John P. Martin of Hume, VA and three daughters from a previous marriage; Lucretia Austell of Simpsonville, SC, Jennifer Austell-Wolfson of The Plains, VA, and Anna Austell Staton of Buena Vista, VA.  She is also survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Harwood Cochrane, a sister, Judith Gilman-Hines, and a brother, James H. Cochrane, Jr., all of Richmond. She has eight grandchildren.
Her daughter, Elizabeth Austell McKenney and her first husband, Frank Giles Austell, III predeceased her. A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 10 AM at Trinity Episcopal Church, Upperville, VA followed by burial.
